Michael Jordan and His Flight to Fame

Michel Jordan is widely praised as being one of the greatest, if not the greatest, basketball players of all time. Michael started playing basketball at a young age and attended college at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After college Michael decided to play in the National Basketball Association and was drafted as the third pick in the first round by the Chicago Bulls (Michael Jordan Biography). There’s a reason people say things like “Dave is the Michael Jordan of grilling burgers.” Quite simply, it’s because Michael was just so good at what he did. However, Michael was not always an amazing basketball star. He had to work his way up and struggled many times along the way. Michael Jordan now uses his image and basketball fame to influence people throughout the world.

Soon after Michael began dominating the basketball scene, he was picked up by multiple sponsors. Companies from all around the United States flocked to try and get the legend himself to be on one of their advertisements. A few of these companies included Nike, Gatorade, Hanes, Upper Deck, 2K Sports, etc. Another was Ball Park, a company that sells hotdogs to all different kinds of sporting events (Smith). Ball Park franks is a very common saying which is very likely to be heard in a collegiate or professional stadium. On this Ball Park advertisement, Michael Jordan’s famous number 23 is clearly displayed to catch the attention of someone who glances at the image. This advertisement would most likely appear in a newspaper or a sports magazine. It would have been directed towards shoppers that enjoy franks or people who are grilling out for a big game. Michael, dressed in a red jersey, is in the center of the page against a very dark background. The contrast of colors focuses the attention of the reader on Michael himself. This dark background also makes it easy to see the bold white letters of the clever caption next to Michael. Ball Park uses Ethos in the advertisement by putting the image of a Michael Jordan at stake, this gives Ball Park credibility and the potential buyer more confidence in the product. Finally, Ball Park attempts to seal the deal with an attached coupon. The coupon provides a monetary incentive for customers to go out and buy Ball Park franks at the store. Michael’s appearance in this advertisement shows that he was willing to take a risk on the name of Ball Park. Ball Park did pay Michael for this advertisement but if the franks suddenly had a problem, such as giving people food poisoning, Michael’s image could easily be damaged. However, this was not the case and both Ball Park and Michael Jordan mutually benefitted from this arrangement (Smith).

When people think of Michael Jordan a common thing that comes to mind is his legendary shoe line. In 1984, Michael made a deal with sport wear superpower Nike to create a new pair of basketball shoes. These shoes, called the Air Jordan’s ended up being so popular that Nike decided to make dozens of different kinds and sell them all over the world. The advertisement shown above is one of thousands to have come out from Nike over the course of the years. Nike would have placed this ad in a magazine or on a large billboard on a highway. The audience of this advertisement would have been shoe collectors, people who like Michael Jordan, and the parents of kids who need new basketball shoes. Someone driving by or flipping through pages would be able to quickly see the dark shoes and dark letters against the all-white background. The letters are in the standard box-like Nike font which makes things easier to read. Although this advertisement doesn’t have Michael himself in it, it uses a word that is very commonly associated with Michael and the shoes, Fly (Fushoes). The words “Drive” and “Fly” and colored red so the reader’s attention is primarily drawn to them. Michael was known for being able to jump ridiculously high and far. He is widely known for being the first person to dunk from the free throw line and kids have looked up to him as a role model since his debut. The advertisement here uses Pathos by getting the reader to imagine all the great things they can accomplish with these shoes. The sentence “Why drive when you can fly?” is supposed to be taken figuratively and allows for a broad concept of what the intent of the advertisement could be. The ad may want you to think, “If I had these shoe’s I could be as good of a basketball player as Michael Jordan” or even “These shoes will make me the most popular person around, just like Michael Jordan is!” When turning to the next page your finger will touch the Nike logo making it the last thing you see and the last thing you will remember. The Air Jordan shoe is Michaels greatest source of publicity and income. All of the Air Jordan shoes have helped build Michael up to the celebrity he has become today.

One of the greatest things about Michael Jordan is that he is not just a basketball player which is shown by his role in the hit movie Space Jam. Space Jam is about a bunch of monsters that steal the powers of famous basketball players to beat Bugs Bunny and his crew at basketball. In the most daring stunt ever pulled, Bugs Bunny persuades Michael Jordan to help the gang beat the monsters. The movie is a classic and the favorite of both young kids and adults. Michael decided to star in Space Jam in 1996 after just coming back to the NBA in 1995 (FashionAshley). The advertisement shown would have been displayed for people entering the movie theater before they bought their tickets. Other than the background, Michael takes up the most space on the page. The white jersey he is wearing against the dark blue background

makes him stand out more than anything else except the other white letters on the page. Both of these things draw attention immediately to Michael. The letters then spell out the name of the two main characters, Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan, who individually convey different feelings. The audience of this movie is the parents of the young children that want to see the movie. When the parent sees Michael Jordan a feeling of trust begins to develop. The poster uses Ethos to give Space Jam the credibility of having the famous Michael Jordan appearing in their movie. Also, feelings of nostalgia would arise when the parents see the Looney Tunes on the poster and remember watching them when they were children. This is how Space Jam uses the element of Pathos by tapping in to the happy emotions of the parent’s past. The children, who are pressuring the parents to buy the tickets, will also recognize the characters and how much fun they are to watch. The children who recognize Michael Jordan and are basketball fans will be drawn to the movie even more. When following the paper trail of Space Jam’s popularity, you can trace one of Air Jordan’s best products, the Space Jam 11. Out of all the shoes that Nike created for their Air Jordan line few have been as iconic the Space Jams. They have a black body with a white stripe on the sole and blue laces and bottoms to make the shoes look like they’re from the distant universe, similar to the advertisement for the movie (FashionAshley). This combination of things allowed the movie to be extremely successful. This movie benefited Michael Jordan by boosting his popularity soon after returning to the National Basketball Association and by further developing his public image.

In his career, Michael Jordan did a lot of things. Michael is involved in many aspects of popular culture in today’s world and will continue to be for generations to come. The name Michael Jordan will live on forever and we will always hear his name floated around whenever a conversation about basketball comes up. Becoming a basketball star turned Michael into a public icon which opened a lot of doors for Michael including clothing lines, advertisements, and movie roles. All of these helped to boost Michael’s image into what it is today, a pop culture icon.

Reflection

The first time I wrote this essay I didn't have a good idea on what I was doing and I came making silly mistakes like mixing up media and mode. Another problem I had was not addressing the audience of my artifacts. When I redid the final paper I delved more into the audience and by doing this I believe I found my breakthrough. After straightening out the difference between media and mode it was very easy to connect the audience to everything I wanted to say. Explaining the goal of the artifacts, how they would've been used, and where they would've been displayed was the general order I went in with other information in between. My favorite part about this project was being able to go back and make changes to clear up information I wanted to explain that was very interesting to me. The breakthrough helped me to understand how advertisements target their audience and how I could do that in my project 3 which I was doing at the time. Now I know how to imply ethos, logos, and pathos correctly.
